A local potter has joined the Art & Design faculty at Derby College, supporting students in the ceramics and 3D design workshops.

Alex Shimwell (35) from Matlock is also teaching pottery evening courses based at the Joseph Wright Campus; Derby College, as part of the College’s learning for Leisure programme.

Alex learned industrial throwing techniques whilst at Staffordshire University from master potter Kevin Millward. The pair worked together again behind the scenes on the new BBC programme ‘The Great Pottery Throw Down’ when Kevin invited Alex to help modify and fire a custom-built gas-fired kiln for the show.
